Scammadale Farm herd consists of 120 pure bred Luing cows which are crossed with a simmental bull to produce Sim-Luing calves and also 20 Simmental cross Luing (Sim-Luing) cattle. Calving takes place mainly in the spring of the year, with the calves sold in October - November at Oban Livestock Centre. Male calves are sold to be fattened in sheds or of grass on arable or low ground farms, while the female calves go for breeding. Sim-Luing cows retaining the hardiness and milking abilities of the Luing, and with the confirmation of the Simmental, make excellent cows for crossing with Charlois or Limousin bulls. The cattle are also grazed at nearby Ardencaple farm on the Isle of Seil.
